As a writer, you are an entrepreneur. You are choosing a nontraditional route in which your written word is your promotion. This makes you in charge of your own business. And, it is a business. The good thing is, it is a business in which you get to do what you love every day (hopefully!). The maybe not-so-good news is you need to learn how to run your business successfully.
For this process, we’re going to assume you have the all necessary blog as a tool for promoting yourself and your work.
The foundation for good success is rich, quality content that engages your readers and keeps them thirsting for more. This is true whether you’ve chosen the traditional publishing route, self-publishing route, or have chosen to write a successful, money-making blog.
Good, strong content that meets some need within your readers will keep them reading and keep them coming back for more. And, while content is key, if you’re looking to make money from your writing, it is only a small part of the equation.
You have to get that content into the hands of your readers and that calls for first understanding who your readers are and just what it is they want. This is where targeting your audience comes in to play. And, effectively targeting your audience calls for market research.
Market research can be gone about in number of ways, a few of which include, and all of which consist of networking with like-minded individuals: connect with the little-guys in fields like or similar to yours, leave comments on sites similar to your own, link to articles in other sites that bring awareness to your topic or genre, author a blog post on another site. These are just a few of the ways you can bring awareness to your own work.
The key here is networking. Networking helps you leverage your assets against those of another’s and can produce a win-win situation.
